The set's internal Genesis/Faroudja scaler converts 1080p and other input signals to the native panel resolution. Unlike some recent plasma offerings from Panasonic and Pioneer, however, the native resolution of this panel is 1366x768 pixels, not the 1920x1080 pixels available on a few considerably more expensive competitive products. The set supports input resolutions from 480i all the way up to 1080p (1920x1080 pixels, progressive). You'll be able to tune into SD and HD channels directly via a built-in tuner that supports standard NTSC television signals, QAM (digital cable) and ATSC digital over-the-air broadcasts. In addition to the usual complement of component, composite and S-video inputs, the VM60P offers a whopping four (4) HDCP-compliant HDMI inputs as well as a computer (VGA) input jack. Other 60-inch plasma sets are appreciably more expensive. If you shop around, you may still be able to find Panasonic's slightly smaller 58-inch plasma model from last year for around the same price but it has two fewer HDMI inputs, does not support 1080p inputs and won't be available for long as it's been replaced by a newer model. This makes it the least expensive flat panel HDTV in this size range by a fairly wide margin. Due to competition and price pressure, the set was recently reduced an additional $500 to just $2499.99.

VIZIO's VM60P, also known as the MAXIMVS (pronounced maximus), debuted in January of this year at CES at a list price of $2999.99 and was available for purchase at warehouse stores such as Costco a few weeks later. What a difference a couple of years makes. So that's 50% more viewing area for around 30% less money. And while the difference between a 50-inch and 60-inch set may not seem like much, those ten inches actually get you 50% more screen area.

And now VIZIO is offering the VM60P - a full 60-inch plasma flat panel HDTV for a list price of only $2499.99. In fact, on a shopping expedition with a friend two years ago, we were thilled to find him a 50-inch plasma set for "only" $3600 (after some serious negotiation). I don't have any analog sources. Not long ago, a 50-inch plasma HDTV would have set you back around four grand.

I know some people are using component for 480p and above, but S-video for analog stuff. Fortunately, my cable box is capable of upconverting everything to 480p or higher so it's not an issue at all.

One other thing to mention is that analog TV on the Maxent via component is total crap. The picture quality is really about equal. Ultimately I bought the Maxent for the plain "picture frame" bezel (wall mounted) and black levels. Many people have gone through several sets to find one that doesn't buzz. (note: Monoprice has HDMI switchers for ~$100)ĥ) Vizio has an exhaust fan that is audible many feet away, and has a known issue where many sets have an audible buzz. Looks like cheap, warped plastic.Ģ) Vizio has two HDMI inputs, Maxent has one. The main differences, as far as I could tell, were:ġ) Vizio bezel is ***-ugly. with the XBox over component I don't notice any. Via HDMI there was a very very slight delay, but that's not there via RGB, interestingly. I have 2 klipsch klf-20's, 15" Definitive Sub (discontinued), a klf-c7, older Sony AVR (plan on getting Denon 2807or a Yammy 1600/2600) and I will at some point either add another set of KLF-20/30's or smaller rears.

What/if any drawbacks does the display have? Are those drawbacks negated (possibly) by the current receivers I am looking at? Any/All input is greatly appreciated. My question is this. With the setup I have, are there any negatives to adding the Vizio (lack of HDMI/DVI outputs upconversion downconversion issues) given the Denon/Yammy I plan on purchasing? I want something that will not be technologically obsolete in the near future, will have great pic quality, and is good for gaming/HD/etc.

The tv will be mainly used for cable/movies (5-7 hrs/day Mon-Fri 10 hrs-Sat/Sun) but I do play Xbox occassionaly and will likely purchase an Xbox 360 and/or a PS3 later this fall. When I do this I will replace it with an SED/Laser DLP/whatever. I will be using it in my den for the next 1.5-2 years, at which time I plan on moving it to my bedroom. I need a display to replace my ancient CRT.
